Diving - the most popular water sport

Scuba diving is Thailand's most popular water sport, and it's an experience you cannot forget. With magical apparatus allowing you to breathe underwater, a whole new universe opens up to you. Some of the most extravagantly beautiful creatures in creation await you in this weightless, watery world. Explore brilliantly-colored coral reefs and be dazzled by fish of a thousand hues. Expect close encounters with giant barracuda, manta rays, sea cows and even sharks!

Thailand is the central focus for scuba diving in Southeast Asia. Thousands of people learn to dive in Thailand every year and become avid divers for life. There are world-class locations for every level of expertise and scores of professional. Well-established dive shops are located all over the southern peninsula. Diving in Thailand is competitively priced, and once you have achieved your certification in Thailand, you can use it to go scuba diving all over the world.

Diving is available at all times of the year, although visibility changes according to the season. In the Andaman Sea the best time to dive is from October to April, and in the Gulf of Thailand from May to September — in other words, first-class diving all year round! All reputable dive shops are affiliated with PADI or other international dive bodies, and most hold courses in multiple languages.

All over Thailand, you can expect modern amenities, international-standard boats and professional facilities.

Dive Excursions

Racha Noi Island: All levels, 4 Dive Sites
An island located 2.5 hours south of Phuket. Excellent visibility, plenty of eels, Lion Fish, Barracuda as well as turtles.

Racha Yai Island: All levels, 4 Dive Sites
This island is about 1.5 hours south of Phuket. Here you will find Blue Spotted Stingrays, snappers, eels and Barracuda.

Ko Doc Mai: Intermediate, 4 Dive Sites
This island can be seen from KM’s away. It is a massive tower of lime stone coming out of the sea a hundred meters or so. From the water line it drops to a depth of 27 to 30 meters to a nice sandy bottom. This is a big wall dive no matter the current you just dive with it. The dive boat picks you up at the end. This dive site is one of my favorites.

Shark Point: Intermediate, 2 Dive Sites
About 1.5 hours east of Phuket, this protected marine sanctuary is famous for its bottom dwelling Leopard Sharks. Leopard Sharks are nocturnal feeders so they are very approachable in the daytime. That makes this dive site a great place to get some underwater pictures and video.

Anemone Reef: Intermediate, 2 Dive Sites
Next door to Shark Point is Anemone Reef, this is a perfect natural jewel, covered with anemones and colorful soft coral plus a never-ending abundance of marine life. I think this is one of the best dive sites.

King Cruiser Wreck: Intermediate, 3 Dive Sites
An 85-meter long car ferry, the "King Cruiser", hit Anemone Reef in 1997 and sunk is now an artificial reef and home to great schools of Barracuda and huge Lion Fish.

Hin Daeng: Advanced, 3 Dive Sites
I think this is one of the best dive sites in southern Thailand; I have been here about 6 times over the past few years. After every dive I have spent hours looking up all the species of fish that I have seen.

Hin Muang: Advanced, 3 Dive Sites
Next door to Hin Daeng, this is some of the best diving in Thai waters; large pelagics often visit including enormous Barracuda and very large Tuna. Whale Sharks often frequent these waters, as do other shark species sand large stingrays.

Koh Ha Yai: All levels, 3 Dive Sites
This is an excellent adventure; the southwestern face has a brilliant cave with two entrances. The cathedrals are not dark because the light filters in from above creating rather strange illusions. This is a must dive.

Phi Phi Island Group: All levels, 10 Dive Sites
This area offers a good variety of different types of diving with abundant hard and soft corals and healthy fish populations. Plenty of coral gardens on the fringing reefs, which are alive with colorful fish. One of my best night dives was in the Phi Phi Island Group.

Similan Islands: Intermediate, 20+ Dive Sites
This is one of the best dive spots in all of Asia. The dramatic underwater terrain is highlighted by thriving reefs and tons of soft corals, the tremendous diversity of marine life includes many of the more exciting, larger stuff. This is were I saw my first Manta Ray about 3.5 meters from tip to tip, it was so cool.

Richelieu Rock: Intermediate, 4+ Dive sites
This is the crown in the Kingdom of Thailand for diving. This is one of the best dive sites in Asia and the one least liked by the boat Captains, it is a rock that stocks out of the water by only a few feet with miles and miles of it underwater. This dive site is the shape of a crown so you get to dive the outside then the inside of it. This is the best dive site to see, with Whale Sharks up to 7 meters.

Similan Islands National Maine Park

The Similan Islands National Marine Park is the centerpiece of live-aboard diving trips in Phuket. Very few places in the world offer a more varied or colorful setting than here. The Similan Islands are made up of a group of 9 islands lying north to south. Each island has its own name but everyone knows them simply by a number. Most islands have gorgeous beaches with fine talcum powder-like sand. The underwater scenery changes as you alternate between the east and west side of the islands. On the east side, the diving is on a sloping hard coral reefs and shallow coral gardens. Here, photographers can happily spend hours in heaven. Now by moving over to the west side it is a totally different world. Here, huge granite boulders stacked on top of one another creating caverns and swim-throughs.

Soft corals cover everything, huge Gregorian Sea Fans and bright yellow tube corals add to the array of color. As for the fish, well more fish then one can imagine. Few places on earth offer as much variety and enjoyment as the Similan Islands. Most reef fish are happy to pose for you. Remember to look overhead and out to sea or you may miss the big one, Manta Rays or even Whale Sharks. Ask your divemaster to show you the hideouts of some of the not so easy to find species, such as the Ghost Pipe Fish, Jaw Fish, Frog Fish or Ribbon Eels. Some of the most loved dive sites are: Elephant Head, Fantasea Reef, Shark Fin Reef, Boulder City, and East of Eden.

Though each of the islands has its own characteristics, they all share the underwater panorama that is uniquely Similan National Marine Park. Divers all agree the Similan Islands never fail to impress them over and over again.

The Season for Golfing in Thailand

Thailand Golfing

Thailand is ideal for year round golfing, with numerous world class golf courses in close proximity to some of the world’s finest beach resorts and breathtaking tourist attractions, making Thailand one of Asia's premier golfing destinations. There are over 200 high standard golf courses countrywide, many of them championship standards; designed by world’s top designers: Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones jr, Pete Dye, Gary Player, Greg Norman, etc. Thailand's secret golfing weapon is its charming caddies; these smiling ladies in smart uniforms will actively assist you to a memorable golfing experience.

Phuket Golfing

Pearl of Andaman’s Phuket is a golfer paradise, well known for their pristine beaches and first class tourist facilities, and home to some of the best golf courses anywhere. You can even tackle the course where Tiger Woods won the Johnnie Walker Classic, Blue Canyon, and host to the Johnnie Walker Classic in 1994, again in 1998 and 2007. Mission Hills Phuket, Laguna Phuket, Loch Palm, and Phuket Country Club complete the list of 5 great golfing venues on the island.

Loch Palms Golf Club & Red Mountain Golf Course

Loch Palm: The most relaxing golf course in Phuket, Thailand. Located in Kathu District just 7 kms. From Phuket Town and Patong Beach, about 15 minutes from Patong.

Nestling below a panoramic range of peaks, and sandwiched between the Katu Waterfalls and Katu Village the layout surrounds the largest lake on any golf course in Phuket, Crystal Lake, 48 acres in size, and its smaller sister lake, which give golfers a refreshing breeze off the water.

This is an 18 hole course par 72, 6,555 yards palm tree-lined beauty, recently completed major re-designs and multi-million dollar upgrades. The course is in great shape. It is a very good layout and one that is beginning to rival some of the best layouts on the island as the refurbishment matures. You are required to put your thinking cap on and keep perfect control of your game on this tightly routed layout.

Red Mountain: This brand new 18-hole course is Loch Palm’s sister course.

Winding its way through a truly dramatic 1400 rai former tin mine site in the heart of Phuket, Red Mountain is surely one of Asia’s most exciting new courses. The course has been cleverly routed to take advantage of a huge variety of landforms and dizzying elevation changes. Scars left from the tin mine era have been imaginatively incorporated into the overall scheme, creating a unique character at the same time as establishing an indelible link with an important era in the Island’s past.

Designer Jon Morrow, has created a highly strategic and challenging 6,900 yard lay out to complement the shorter and gentler old Loch Palm Course. While the course is undoubtedly challenging, numerous risk and reward options create a fun playing environment, an exhilarating test of golf and a breathtaking scenic tour around a course destined to become a golfing landmark in the region.

Blue Canyon Country Club Phuket

At the northern end of Phuket, is recognized as being the most exclusive golfing establishment in the region. It is surrounded by freshwater lakes and has facilities to match any of the world's leading golf resorts.

Host to the Johnnie Walker Classic in 1998, this championship course features many natural hazards, multiple tees, narrow landing areas, rolling fairways and well guarded greens. Signature hole number 13 the 'Canyon' and the 'Island' par three 14th are memorable. At the 13th a huge drive is needed to clear the 'Canyon' and at 14, a par three, players hit from an elevated tee and must hit a perfect tee shot in order to land on the island green. The huge and opulent clubhouse affords magnificent view of the golf course and has every facility.

Banyan Tree Golf Club

Banyan Tree Phuket Golf Club is a resort style 18 hole golf course located within the Laguna Phuket development. Situated on the exclusive Bang Tao Bay on the western shore of Phuket, this par 71 layout stretches 6,850 yards from the championship tees.

Meandering through the lagoons and resort areas of Laguna Phuket with a backdrop of green tropical hills and spectacular views of the Andaman Sea, The Banyan Tree Golf Course is a golfer's paradise. Designed to challenge players of all abilities, the course features lagoons, coconut groves and generous, undulating fairways.

Phuket Country Club

Phuket Country Club was established in 1989, is the first and one of the finest golf courses built in Phuket, laid out over a reclaimed tin mine site. The beauty and elegance of the course, together with the typical Thai charm and hospitality will make your golfing here a joyful & memorable occasion.

The Club has hosted Ladies Kosaido Thailand Open 1992, the Prince Bernard Cup, Thai Senior PGA Challenge 202, Phuket Thailand Ladies Masters 2005 and the Phuket Asian Senior Master 2006.

The Club was Awarded 'Best Courses in Thailand ' - Asian Golf Magazine 2001: 1. Blue Canyon Country Club 2. Thai Country Club 3. Leam Chabang Golf Club 4. Alpine Golf & Sports Club 5. Phuket Country Club.

Awarded 'Best Holes Par-Five' by Asian Golf Magazine in 2001: 1. Shan Shui Golf Club - Hole #4 2. Bintan Lagoon Golf & Beach Resort - Hole #11 (Seaview Course) 3. Bukit Pelangi Golf Club - Hole #4 4. Phuket Country Club - Hole #10 5. Mission Hills Golf Club - Hole #7 (World Cup Course).

Phuket Country Club is conveniently located 10 minutes out of Phuket town and 15 minutes to Patong Beach.

Laguna Phuket Golf Club

Voted Top Ten for Best Golf Resort in Asia, Best Clubhouse in Asia and Best Golf Courses in Thailand by readers of Asian Golf Monthly magazine, Laguna Phuket Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 resort course, designed by Max Wexler and David Abell, which challenges golfing enthusiasts of all abilities. Measuring 6,654 yards from the back tees and 5,464 yards from the front tees, the course features a wealth of scenic lagoons, coconut groves and undulating fairways, set against the dramatic backdrop of the surrounding mountains and Andaman Sea.

Meandering through the labyrinth of lagoons, the course requires golfers to play with great accuracy, and to select clubs carefully. Water looms on 13 of the 18 holes and threatens to swallow any shot veering too far to the side. On several holes, adventurous long hitters will certainly enjoy taking a rewarding gamble by cutting corners, while on other holes, strategic iron play is a must!

Laguna Phuket Golf Club also offers a wonderful opportunity for you to refine your game at its extensive practice facilities. Features include a covered area for sun and rain protection, a driving range, putting greens, practice bunkers and chipping areas; so you can work on both your short and long games. The Club also provides professional golf instruction.

The well-appointed clubhouse and pro shop offer an impressive range of golfing accessories, as well as a billiard table, three tennis courts and the Banyan Café.

In terms of location, Laguna Phuket Golf Club is just 20 minutes' from Phuket International Airport, and only 25 minutes from Phuket Town. In fact, it is easily reached from virtually all points on the island.

Phuket Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa

The new world golfer’s destination, Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort & Spa has opened an 18 hole ocean view, and an ongoing 9 hole bay view night golf course, designed by the world class golf course artist, Nicklaus Design.

Measuring 6,806 yards from the back tees, the golf course is fulfilled with the best selected grass, Paspalum Sea Isle 1 for fairways and Paspalum Sea Isle 2000 for greens. One island two sharing greens, one hole two greens and beach bunkers are outstandingly featured to challenge even the most conservative golfers.

Those who say the least - often don't need to say much . . . an EXCELLENT course.
